When someone in the family is arrested or imprisoned, the people who carry the most are often the people nobody asks about. Partners, parents, siblings and children absorb the shock, the stigma, the practical chaos and the long silence between visits. Friends drift away, and even sympathetic relatives do not know what to say. Our Emotional Support for Families service gives you a steady, knowledgeable person to talk to — someone who understands the system from the inside and never judges.

Research on prisoners' families consistently shows high levels of anxiety, sleep problems and financial strain, especially in the first weeks after sentencing. Much of that distress comes from uncertainty: not knowing what is happening, what will happen next, or who is safe to ask. Information genuinely reduces fear — which is why every conversation with us includes clear, practical answers, not just reassurance.
We are deliberately non-judgemental. Whatever the offence, whatever your role in it, you are a family member trying to keep things standing. That is the only thing we need to know about you to start helping.
Contact is the strongest predictor of wellbeing — for the person inside and the family outside. We help you make the most of every channel: phone credit and PIN issues, the prison email system, letters, video calls, and of course visits. When contact breaks down — a phone number is not approved, mail is returned, calls stop coming — we tell you the likely cause and the right person to contact.
Supporting someone in prison is a long-distance marathon, and carers burn out quietly. We encourage realistic boundaries — you are a family member, not a lawyer, not a case worker, and not responsible for the sentence. Where we are not the right help, we say so and point you to the right service, including family support charities and counselling services. There is no obligation to take any recommendation.
Support is structured around scheduled check-in calls at a rhythm that suits you, plus contact whenever something urgent happens — a concern about your loved one's welfare, an incident at the prison, or a sudden move. If we are worried about someone's safety, we act immediately and show you the escalation route, including the Safer Custody team. Everything is confidential. A discovery call with a senior adviser: what to expect, how to prepare, and where we can help. We are independent operational advisers — not solicitors, and this is not legal advice.
